CONTRAST AT THE VANS US OPEN

For the second consecutive year we had the luxury of having two photographers; Nick Tellez and Travis Mortz document the 2018 Vans US Open Pro Cup stop.

With the pair of them having a diverse eye to one and another, I decided this year to run both galleries side by side to show the contrast on the way they shot the Final day through their cameras.

Here’s a small run down on both of them.

Travis Mortz
Age – 28
Hometown – Foresthill, CA
Years shooting – 12
Kit USED – For the instax wide film I used my homemade “Frankenstax” camera. I also shot 35mm with Nikon FM2 and Leica M3.
Favourite shot – Boys Hilder’s downside pegs. Boyds run was action packed from start to finish and he did some shit that nobody else touched. i feel like he really was the best rider on the course that day.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND A CAMERA FOR SOMEONE GETTING INTO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY? – for someone getting into film I would recommend buying a pentax k1000 or a nikon fm to start out with, they are reliable mechanical cameras that will never leave you high and dry.
Nick Tellez
Age – 28
Hometown – Costa Mesa, CA
Years shooting – 10
Kit USED – Canon 5DSR / 16-35MM 2.8 / 50MM 1.2 / 70 – 200MM 2.8
Favourite shot – Hands down Larry edgar’s high air photo! that is bmx in it’s purest form. high flying insanity!
CAN YOU RECOMMEND A CAMERA FOR SOMEONE GETTING INTO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY? – if you think you’ve mastered the trustY old camera on your iphone and want to take the next step into digital photography, i’d say any DSLR KIT FROM THE $500-$1000 RETAIL PRICE RANGE SHOULD GET THE JOB DONE VERY WELL. AN IPHONE CAMERA IS A GREAT STARTING POINT TO LEARN THE BASIC FUNDAMENTALS OF PICTURE TAKING BUT A DSLR WILL GIVE YOU GREATER CONTROL WHEN CREATING AN IMAGE WITH THE ABILITY TO PUT YOUR OWN SPIN ON IT WITHOUT ANY FILTERS OR APPS.
